Trauma

Trauma can be defined as experiencing extreme stress which overcomes our capacity to manage a negative event(s). Experiencing a traumatic event can lead to feelings of helplessness and the devastating belief that we are unable to cope. Trauma can result from a single event or repeated trauma incidents such as accidents, natural disasters, criminal violence, war/political violence, physical/emotional/sexual abuse, domestic violence, and prolonged stress.

Trauma robs us of our sense of control and makes us believe the world is an unsafe and dangerous place. Trauma consumes us with overwhelming fear, anger, terror, and suffering. Symptoms of trauma can include flashbacks, isolation, hyper-vigilance, dissociation, avoidance, and numbing. Trauma can make us feel alone and consumed by despair.

But, there is hope. Working with a trauma trained therapist can help you find the trust and belief you need to manage your past and build a more peaceful and meaningful life.
