What Chronic Stress & Burnout Feels Like
At times, we all face busy seasons, demanding deadlines, or heavy periods of responsibility. Usually, once a major project wraps up or life settles down, our energy bounces back and we feel restored.
But when high pressure never stops and demands continually outpace your capacity, chronic stress can gradually turn into deep, systemic burnout.
You might find yourself feeling constantly drained, cynical, or detached from work and daily life. Rather than starting your day with focus or enthusiasm, waking up can feel like an immediate physical and emotional chore. Meanwhile, on the inside, you may feel perpetually overwhelmed, irritable with loved ones, or operating on empty. Essential tasks like managing your schedule, setting healthy boundaries, or finding time to truly relax, can feel like exhausting obligations rather than manageable parts of your routine.
How Stress & Burnout Can affect Your Daily Life
Burnout isn't just a state of mind, it's a full-body system overload that changes how you navigate daily life. Left unaddressed, chronic stress drains your energy until every single responsibility feels like an uphill battle.
Your Body: You may feel perpetually depleted, waking up tired regardless of how much sleep you get, or experiencing frequent physical fatigue. You may experience tension headaches, muscle aches, digestive issues or difficulty unwinding at the end of the day.
Your Mind: You may feel detached from your career, unmotivated, or experiencing a sense of uselessness and declining efficiency. You may be feeling short tempered, anxious, or overwhelmed by minor everyday inconveniences. You may experience brain fog, increased impulsivity, and have a hard time multi-tasking. Stress and burnout can make it more difficult for you to learn new skills and increase indecisiveness. These are recognized symptoms of prolonged stress , NOT a character flaw, and they're something your therapist can help you work through.
Your World: You may find yourself struggling to set boundaries, over-committing to work or family demands. You may be struggling to say no and feeling guilty for taking the time to rest. You may also find yourself withdrawing, avoiding calls, cancelling plans or physically isolating yourself, in an effort to conserve energy.
Feeling drained or disconnected from who you used to be isn't a personal failing, it's burnout talking. You don't have to carry all of this alone.
At Viewpoint, we recognize that stress & burnout manifests differently for everyone, meaning there is no “one-size-fits-all” path to recovery.
Rather than forcing a rigid framework, our licensed therapists draw from a broad range of clinically proven modalities. Your treatment plan is uniquely tailored to you, blending your therapist’s specialized expertise with your specific goals, history, and comfort level.
Evidence-Based & Personalized Therapy at Viewpoint
Modalities & Clinical Frameworks We Utilize
Depending on your individual needs and the specialized approach of your therapist, your care plan may incorporate elements from:
Cognitive & Behavioural Therapies
Identify perfectionist tendencies, people-pleasing habits, and unhelpful thought cycles that drive overwork and self-imposed pressure.
Somatic & Body-Oriented Modalities
Somatic therapy focuses on tracking physical sensations (tightness, numbness, shallow breathing) to help the body complete interrupted stress responses and restore nervous system regulation.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy
ACT helps you accept current stress signals without judgment while re-orienting your daily actions toward core personal values (e.g., family, health, creativity) rather than just productivity.
Mindfulness-Based Strategies
Body scans, guided meditation, and gentle movement stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (“rest and digest”), physically lowering cortisol levels and softening muscle tension.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Stress is generally characterized by “too much”, too many demands, pressures, or responsibilities that require excessive physical or mental energy. Burnout, on the other hand, is characterized by “not enough” feeling empty, exhausted, cynical, and emotionally depleted after prolonged, unmanaged stress. While stressed individuals often believe things will improve once everything is under control, individuals experiencing burnout feel hopeless, detached, and lack motivation.
-
Yes. While therapy may not immediately change your workload, job environment, or family obligations, it changes how your body and mind respond to those demands. Counselling helps you build physiological stress resilience, identify areas where you can establish firmer boundaries, alter internal perfectionist patterns, and prevent ongoing chronic strain from turning into severe physical or mental exhaustion.
-
Yes, we offer in-person counselling at our clinic in the North Hill Professional Centre (Suite 221, 1632 14th Avenue NW, Calgary), as well as secure telehealth therapy for individuals located across Alberta.
-
Private counselling is not covered by Alberta Health Care. However, most extended health benefit plans (e.g., Sun Life, Canada Life, Manulife, Blue Cross) and Health Spending Accounts (HSAs) provide full or partial coverage for services provided by Registered Psychologists, Provisionally Registered Psychologists, or Licensed Social Workers. We recommend checking with your insurance provider prior to your first session to confirm your specific plan’s coverage details.
-
No, you do not need a doctor's referral to begin therapy at Viewpoint. We intentionally allow you to reach out and book an appointment directly with us to make accessing support as easy and seamless as possible, especially on days when your energy and motivation are low. While a small number of specific insurance policies require a physician’s note for insurance reimbursement, the vast majority allow you to self-refer and begin care immediately.
-
Burnout recovery is a gradual process that depends on how long you have been operating in a state of depletion. Many clients begin experiencing initial relief, clearer boundaries, and reduced physical tension within 6 to 10 sessions. Complete recovery and long-term mindset shifts often take several months of consistent self-care, therapeutic guidance, and sustainable lifestyle adjustments.
-
Burnout and depression share similar symptoms, such as deep fatigue, low motivation, and difficulty concentrating. However, burnout is typically tied directly to specific stressors, environments, or roles (such as a demanding career or caregiving responsibilities). Depression tends to affect all areas of life, regardless of environment, and often includes pervasive feelings of worthlessness or persistent sadness. A therapist can help clarify what you are experiencing and tailor your treatment accordingly.
-
Yes. Research comparing online and in-person cognitive behavioural therapy has repeatedly found comparable outcomes for treating depression and anxiety — including a 2018 meta-analysis in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that combined 20 studies of over 1,400 patients (Carlbring et al., 2018). Virtual sessions let you receive compassionate, high-quality care from the comfort and privacy of your own home, which can be especially helpful on days when low energy makes leaving the house difficult.
