Professional Perinatal Mental Health Counselling in NW Calgary.
Becoming a parent can bring profound changes to your life, relationships, and sense of self. Viewpoint offers compassionate, personalized counselling to support individuals navigating the emotional challenges of pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition into parenthood.
Our therapists provide a supportive space to explore anxiety, depression, fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, birth experiences, and the many adjustments that can accompany growing your family. Whether you are preparing for a new chapter or struggling with how things have unfolded, you do not have to navigate it alone.
What Perinatal Mental Health Challenges Can Feel Like:
Pregnancy and the transition into parenthood are often portrayed as joyful and fulfilling experiences. While they can bring moments of connection and excitement, they can also involve uncertainty, grief, anxiety, and unexpected emotional challenges.
You might find yourself worrying constantly about your pregnancy or your baby's wellbeing, feeling overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for a child, or questioning whether you are doing enough. You may be struggling with intrusive thoughts, difficulty sleeping, low mood, or feelings of guilt that make it hard to talk openly about what you are experiencing.
For some, the transition into parenthood can bring a sense of disconnection from their previous identity, relationships, or expectations for the future. Others may be navigating fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, a difficult birth experience, or the complex emotions associated with adoption.
Whatever your experience looks like, your feelings deserve space and understanding. There is no single way to experience pregnancy or parenthood, and struggling during this time does not mean you are failing.
How Perinatal Mental Health Can Affect Your Daily Life:
Perinatal mental health challenges can affect more than your mood. They can influence how you relate to yourself, your child, your partner, and the people around you. When emotional demands become difficult to manage, even everyday responsibilities can begin to feel overwhelming.
Your Body: You may experience persistent fatigue, changes in appetite, physical tension, difficulty sleeping, or a sense of being constantly on edge. It can be difficult to distinguish emotional distress from the physical demands of pregnancy, recovery, and caring for a newborn.
Your Mind: You may experience persistent worry, intrusive thoughts, sadness, irritability, guilt, or difficulty concentrating. You might feel pressure to enjoy every moment while privately struggling with anxiety, uncertainty, or a sense that you are not the parent you expected to be. These experiences are not a reflection of your worth or your ability to be a good parent. When emotional challenges become difficult to manage, counselling can help you understand what you are experiencing and explore ways to cope.
Your Relationships: You may notice changes in your relationship with your partner, family, or friends. Differences in parenting expectations, communication difficulties, reduced intimacy, or feeling unsupported can contribute to tension and isolation. You may also find it difficult to ask for help or make time for your own needs while caring for others. You do not have to navigate these changes alone. Perinatal mental health support offers space to work through difficult emotions, strengthen your coping skills, and reconnect with what matters to you.
At Viewpoint, we recognize that every person's experience of pregnancy and parenthood is different. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to perinatal mental health. Our therapists work collaboratively with you to understand your unique circumstances, goals, and needs.
Depending on your individual needs and your therapist's areas of expertise, counselling may incorporate elements from the following therapeutic approaches.
Evidence-Based & Personalized Therapy at Viewpoint
Cognitive & Behavioural Therapies
CBT can help you recognize patterns of anxious thinking, self-criticism, and unrealistic expectations that may contribute to distress. Together, you can explore more balanced perspectives and develop practical strategies for managing worry, guilt, and overwhelm.
Person-Centered Therapy
A person-centred approach provides a supportive, non-judgmental space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace. Your therapist will work alongside you to understand your perspective, recognize your strengths, and identify the kind of support that feels right for you.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy
ACT can help you make room for difficult emotions without judging yourself for having them. By identifying your values and what matters most to you, you can work toward responding to challenges with greater flexibility and self-compassion.
Mindfulness-Based Strategies
Mindfulness and self-compassion practices can help you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions while reducing the pressure to meet unrealistic expectations. These approaches may support emotional regulation, help you respond to yourself with greater kindness, and create moments of calm during an overwhelming season.

Private counselling is not covered by Alberta Health Care. However, most extended health benefit plans (e.g., Sun Life, Canada Life, Manulife, Blue Cross) and Health Spending Accounts (HSAs) provide full or partial coverage for services provided by Registered Psychologists, Provisionally Registered Psychologists, or Licensed Social Workers. We recommend checking with your insurance provider prior to your first session to confirm your specific plan’s coverage details.
-
No, you do not need a doctor's referral to begin therapy at Viewpoint. We intentionally allow you to reach out and book an appointment directly with us to make accessing support as easy and seamless as possible, especially on days when your energy and motivation are low. While a small number of specific insurance policies require a physician’s note for insurance reimbursement, the vast majority allow you to self-refer and begin care immediately.
-
Burnout recovery is a gradual process that depends on how long you have been operating in a state of depletion. Many clients begin experiencing initial relief within 6 to 10 sessions. Complete recovery and long-term mindset shifts often take several months of consistent self-care, therapeutic guidance, and sustainable lifestyle adjustments.
-
Bonding experiences vary, and connection does not always happen immediately. Physical recovery, exhaustion, emotional distress, and unexpected birth experiences can all affect how you feel. Counselling can provide a supportive space to explore these feelings without judgment and identify what support may be helpful.
-
Yes. Research comparing online and in-person cognitive behavioural therapy has repeatedly found comparable outcomes for treating depression and anxiety — including a 2018 meta-analysis in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that combined 20 studies of over 1,400 patients (Carlbring et al., 2018). Virtual sessions let you receive compassionate, high-quality care from the comfort and privacy of your own home, which can be especially helpful on days when low energy makes leaving the house difficult.
