Grief & Loss
We all experience sadness, longing, or heartache after losing someone or something meaningful to us. Usually, these initial waves of pain subside into manageable memories over time.
But when a devastating loss occurs, whether it is the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a major life transition, or a lost life path, it can feel like the world keeps spinning while time has completely stopped for you.
You might find yourself perpetually carrying a heavy weight in your chest, feeling detached, or experiencing unexpected surges of sorrow, anger, or numbness. Rather than feeling steady or present in your daily routine, you may feel disoriented, exhausted, or stuck in endless loops of memory and longing. Meanwhile, daily activities that used to feel simple, like running errands, focusing at work, or engaging in social conversations, can suddenly feel like overwhelming obstacles.
Types of Grief & Loss We Support
Grief is a natural response to any significant loss, and its expression is as unique as the individual experiencing it. Therapy can effectively address a wide spectrum of loss-related concerns, including:
· Bereavement & Death of a Loved One: Navigating the profound absence of a parent, partner, sibling, child, relative, or close friend.
· Relationship Loss & Divorce: Processing the end of a partnership, marriage, or deep friendship, including the loss of shared dreams and future plans.
· Health & Physical Changes: Coping with a severe diagnosis, chronic illness, loss of mobility, or major shifts in physical capability.
· Life Transitions & Identity Loss: Adjusting to career changes, retirement, empty nest syndrome, or losing a long-standing role or life path.
· Complicated or Disenfranchised Grief: Supporting losses that feel unacknowledged by society, stigmatized, or lingering in ways that feel impossible to move past alone.
How Grief & Loss Can Unfold in Your Daily Life
Grief is not simply a single emotion; it is a profound human experience that reverberates across every part of your daily routine. It reaches far beyond emotional sadness, reshaping how you experience your physical body, your mental clarity, and your relationship with the surrounding world.
Your Body: Grief carries a heavy physical toll. You may experience persistent fatigue, muscle tension, a heavy feeling in your chest, digestive disruption, or changes in your appetite. Sleep often becomes fragmented—leaving you waking up unrefreshed or unable to fall asleep—as your physical body continuously holds on to stress and heartache.
Your Mind: The cognitive load of loss can make everyday mental tasks feel overwhelming. You might experience severe "grief brain," characterized by brain fog, forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, or second-guessing routine decisions. Intrusive memories, constant replay of past events, or a persistent sense of mental disorientation can make maintaining focus at work or home a daily struggle.
Your World: Loss often disrupts your sense of safety, predictability, and social connection. You may feel pulled toward social withdrawal, finding small talk exhausting or feeling as though those around you cannot fully understand what you are going through. Daily environments, special dates, or familiar places can trigger unexpected waves of pain, altering how you move through your community, relationships, and daily obligations.
When daily life feels altered in every way, remember that you do not have to carry the weight of this transformation entirely on your own.
At Viewpoint, we believe every client deserves a personal approach. Rather than forcing a rigid framework, our licensed therapists draw from a broad range of clinically proven modalities. Your treatment plan is uniquely tailored to you, blending your therapist's specialized expertise with your specific goals, history, and comfort level.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
· Grief is a natural response to loss, and there is no "right" way to experience it. However, if you find that your grief feels overwhelming, paralyzing, or unmanageable—or if it is significantly interfering with your sleep, work, relationships, or physical health over time—seeking professional support can provide a safe space to process your emotions and help you navigate the healing process at your own pace.
-
· Normal (or uncomplicated) grief involves intense emotional pain that gradually shifts and softens over time, allowing you to slowly reintegrate into daily routines. Complicated (or prolonged) grief occurs when the emotional distress remains severe, relentless, and unyielding for an extended period, making it feel nearly impossible to process the loss or function in day-to-day life. Therapy can be instrumental in helping untangle complicated grief.
-
Yes, we offer in-person counselling at our clinic in the North Hill Professional Centre (Suite 221, 1632 14th Avenue NW, Calgary), as well as secure telehealth therapy for individuals located across Alberta.
-
Private counselling is not covered by Alberta Health Care. However, most extended health benefit plans (e.g., Sun Life, Canada Life, Manulife, Blue Cross) and Health Spending Accounts (HSAs) provide full or partial coverage for services provided by Registered Psychologists, Provisionally Registered Psychologists, or Licensed Social Workers. We recommend checking with your insurance provider prior to your first session to confirm your specific plan’s coverage details.
-
No, you do not need a doctor's referral to begin therapy at Viewpoint. We intentionally allow you to reach out and book an appointment directly with us to make accessing support as easy and seamless as possible, especially on days when your energy and motivation are low. While a small number of specific insurance policies require a physician’s note for insurance reimbursement, the vast majority allow you to self-refer and begin care immediately.
-
· Grief does not follow a fixed schedule, linear path, or set timeline. The duration of therapy varies based on your individual needs, the nature of your loss, and your personal goals. Some people find clarity and relief in a few short-term sessions focused on grounding techniques, while others benefit from longer-term support as they process complex emotions. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to review your progress and adjust session frequency as needed.
-
· Absolutely. Grief applies to any significant loss or life alteration. Therapy is highly effective for processing non-death losses, including relationship breakups or divorce, job loss, health diagnoses, infertility, life transitions, retirement, or the loss of a life goal or sense of safety. All forms of loss are valid and deserving of compassionate support.
-
Yes. Research comparing online and in-person cognitive behavioural therapy has repeatedly found comparable outcomes for treating clients, including a 2018 meta-analysis in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that combined 20 studies of over 1,400 patients (Carlbring et al., 2018). Virtual sessions let you receive compassionate, high-quality care from the comfort and privacy of your own home, which can be especially helpful on days when low energy makes leaving the house difficult.
-
Your initial session will provide a comfortable, confidential space to share what you’ve been experiencing. You and your therapist will explore your current challenges, personal history, and goals for therapy to co-create a personalized care plan tailored to your pace.
